We find disturbing the hazing allegations contained in recent news about the Northwestern University football team. We believe President Schill is right to reevaluate his initial sanctions against the football program. It is the responsibility of coaches and administrators to have zero-tolerance policies on hazing and to build a culture of transparency and trust for student-athletes.
Hazing can quickly escalate causing mental and physical harm to victims. This situation at Northwestern is an important reminder that hazing is found in all-types of organizations and teams. With more than half of college students exposed to hazing before reaching college, education and adult guidance at earlier ages is paramount.
