Dr. Emily Perlow

LEAD FACILITATOR

Dr. Emily Perlow is the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, a Lecturer in the Counselor Education and Family Therapy Program at Central Connecticut State University, and is a Research Affiliate in the Center for Student Success Research at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She has a Ph.D. in Educational Policy from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and an MA in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University. Her research in the area of hazing focuses on the role hazing plays in the construction and performance of gender identity enacted through adult play behaviors. She most recently co-authored a monograph on hazing prevention and intervention research at the high school and college level. In addition to serving as the co-chair emeritus of the NASPA fraternity/sorority knowledge community, she volunteered for many years with the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors and Alpha Gamma Delta. Her research interests include hazing, masculinity, deviance among college populations, and marginalized populations in STEM.

Rasheed Ali Cromwell, Esq.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Rasheed Ali Cromwell is founder and president of The Harbor Institute, an educational consulting firm based in Washington, D.C. He has presented keynotes and training sessions at over 300 colleges/universities in 45 states. He utilizes a unique multidisciplinary approach from his diverse experiences as a former federal law clerk, a practicing attorney, an educational consultant, and speaker/trainer to address his areas of expertise including hazing prevention and intervention, cultural competency, leadership development and recruitment and retention regarding culturally based fraternal organizations (CBFOs).

Dr. Brian Gearity

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Brian joined DU in September 2014 to create and launch the Master of Arts in Sport Coaching program. Known colloquially as Dr. G or Coach, since then, he has created and launched 24-credit Graduate Certificates in Strength and Conditioning (S&C) and Fitness Coaching, and 16-credit specialized graduate certificates in S&C and the Psychology of Coaching. Dr. Gearity also created and launched the Kinesiology and Sport Studies minor (in 2021) and major (in 2023) at DU. As a scholar, Dr. Gearity co-edited the book, “Coach Education and Development in Sport: Instructional Strategies” and co-authored, “Understanding Strength and Conditioning as Sport Coaching: Bridging the Biophysical, Pedagogical and Sociocultural Foundations of Practice.” He is Editor-in-Chief for the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s practitioner journal NSCA Coach and Associate Editor-in-Chief of Strength & Conditioning Journal. He serves on the editorial board of International Sport Coaching Journal, Sport Coaching Review, and Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise, and Health. Brian is also a former high school, collegiate, and professional strength and conditioning coach and has coached numerous youth sports, but most recently middle school tackle football. In 2023, Dr. Gearity was promoted to full Professor and named Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of GSPP, as well as became an alumnus of DU earning his MBA from Daniels College of Business.

Stevan Veldkamp

FACILITATOR

Stevan J. Veldkamp, Ed.D., is the Executive Director of the Penn State Timothy J. Piazza Center for Fraternity and Sorority Research. Under his leadership, the center is dedicated to creating effective strategies to empower students to address issues related to hazing and unsafe drinking. With 30 years of extensive experience in student affairs, Veldkamp earned his doctorate in higher education from Indiana University.

Susie Bruce

FACILITATOR

Susie Bruce, M.Ed., is Director of the University of Virginia’s Gordie Center, which works to end hazing and substance misuse among college and high school students nationwide through evidence-informed, student-tested resources. She has 30 years’ experience in collegiate health promotion, with expertise in the social norms approach, peer education, and curriculum infusion. She directs the APPLE Training Institutes: the leading national strategic training program for substance misuse prevention and health promotion for student-athletes and athletics departments and is a Faculty Affiliate of Youth-Nex, the Center to Promote Effective Youth Development. She serves on the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism’s College Working Group and the Virginia Higher Education Substance Use Advisory Committee.

Kyle Dupper

FACILITATOR

Kyle Dupper is a member of FarmHouse Fraternity. He is an alumnus of Virginia Tech and Texas Christian University and is the current Associate Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life at Colorado School of Mines. Kyle is originally from Swedesboro, New Jersey and now resides in Denver, Colorado with wife Rhiana and two miniature dachshunds Stella and Faith.

Kollin Fitzpatrick

FACILITATOR

Kollin has worked in the fraternity/sorority life industry for almost 10 years as a campus and headquarters professional. He currently serves as the Assistant Director for Health and Well-Being for Delta Gamma Fraternity, where he oversees all educational and prevention initiatives related to alcohol and substance misuse, hazing, sexual misconduct and mental health interventions. He is also a full-time doctoral student at Ohio State University and a resident of Columbus, OH.

Jill Maurer

FACILITATOR

Jill Maurer is Assistant Director of the University of Virginia’s Gordie Center, which works to end hazing and substance misuse among college and high school students nationwide through evidence-informed, student-tested resources. She plays an integral role in Gordie Center program creation and educational product development. Jill has a B.A. in psychology from the University of Virginia and regularly speaks at national conferences, colleges, high schools, and community groups as an expert in hazing prevention, alcohol overdose prevention, peer education, and bystander intervention. She currently serves on the Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Drug Misuse Prevention and Recovery’s Training Advisory Committee.

Christopher Miofsky

FACILITATOR

Christopher Miofsky has built a career rooted in education, leadership, and community engagement. Christopher attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), where he earned his undergraduate degree and became a proud member of Delta Lambda Phi fraternity. His commitment to higher education and student affairs led him to pursue graduate studies at the University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL). He is furthering his education at the University of Denver, deepening his expertise in student development and leadership. His professional journey has taken him to several institutions, including Lindenwood University and Washburn University, where he worked to enhance student experiences and foster inclusive communities. Today, Christopher serves as the Associate Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of Denver, where he continues to support student growth and leadership development. He believes in the power of storytelling to connect with students, helping them find meaning in their experiences and guiding them on their own paths to success.

Todd Shelton

HPN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Todd Shelton serves as the executive director of the Hazing Prevention Network. With two decades in nonprofit management, Todd has a breadth of experience as an award-winning executive and volunteer. He is a leader within the Anti-Hazing Coalition which advocates for state and federal legislation to increase education, transparency and individual accountability around hazing. He previously served as the Chief Communication Officer at the North American Interfraternity Conference where he worked to advance the brand of fraternity, created and implemented industry-wide response protocols and resources, and directed the communication strategy for the NIC. He is a middle Tennessee native living in Indianapolis, Ind.
